Canada resumes grain exports to Europe via Arctic Port of Churchill

Canada’s Port of Churchill in Manitoba has shipped grain to Europe for the first time since 2020. About 30 thsd tons of durum wheat, supplied by Saskatchewan-based AGT Foods, was loaded onto a vessel this week.

The vessel is the first of three grain ships expected to call at Churchill during the current shipping season. The shipments are part of a new partnership between port operator Arctic Gateway Group and AGT Foods.

Located on Hudson Bay, Churchill is Canada’s only deep-water Arctic port connected to the North American rail network. In July, the port operator and Hudson Bay Railway announced the resumption of rail grain shipments to Churchill for export.

The return of grain shipments is expected to provide a foundation for increasing cargo traffic through the corridor. The operators are also considering extending the port’s shipping season, which currently lasts about four months a year.

Arctic Gateway Group expects the development of the route to help diversify Canada’s export flows and provide western and northern regions with additional access to international markets. In addition to grain, Churchill aims to expand shipments of minerals, potash and other commodities.
