Burkina Faso has suspended rice imports with immediate effect, a move expected to weigh on export prices from India, according to market participants.

The government said the decision aims to support domestic rice production and reduce reliance on foreign supplies. Import permits have been frozen, with only existing approvals allowed to clear within a limited transition period before a full halt takes effect.

Traders said the move has already triggered a drop in Indian parboiled rice prices, with some market estimates pointing to a decline of around 5% amid weakening demand from West Africa. The impact is amplified by tighter trade conditions in neighbouring Benin, which further restricts regional flow routes.

India shipped more than 61,000 tonnes of rice to Burkina Faso in 2025, though volumes were already down about 25% year-on-year, reflecting a gradual slowdown in demand from the region even before the ban.

Market participants expect continued downward pressure on prices as West African import demand weakens and trade flows are redirected, although the broader impact may remain uneven across global rice suppliers.
