Bulgaria more than doubles corn production as sunflower harvest rises nearly 80%
Bulgaria has significantly increased production of major grains and oilseeds in the MY 2026/27 following a difficult previous season. According to Stoyan Valev of Grainstore Bulgaria, the country’s corn crop is estimated at around 2 mln tons, compared with 900 thsd tons a year earlier, representing an increase of more than twofold. The figures were presented at the Grain Academy conference held in Sofia on October 22.
Bulgarian sunflower seed production is forecast at 2.5 mln tons this season, up from 1.4 mln tons a year earlier, representing an increase of nearly 79%. Wheat output also rose and is estimated at 7.8 mln tons, compared with 7.5 mln tons in the previous season. The recovery in major crop production creates opportunities for increased export supplies of Bulgarian grain and sunflower seed.
However, logistical challenges continue to constrain the country’s export potential. Low Danube water levels are limiting river transportation, while pressure on railway infrastructure and rising transport costs are complicating deliveries of agricultural commodities to ports and end buyers. As a result, larger harvests do not necessarily translate into corresponding increases in farmers’ revenues.
Wheat quality is another important factor for the grain market. According to Grainstore Bulgaria, a significant share of the harvested crop is mainly suitable for feed use, while quality varies considerably between growing regions. This affects the composition of export supplies and the ability to market wheat to different destinations.
Developments in the Black Sea also influence the competitiveness of Bulgarian grain. Prolonged shipping disruptions may increase demand for alternative origins but also raise freight and insurance costs. Conversely, improved maritime transport conditions could intensify competition from other Black Sea exporters. Therefore, despite the recovery in production, Bulgaria’s export prospects will largely depend on logistics costs and conditions in the regional grain market.
