The quarantine restrictions that were imposed a year ago and still remain in force urged people to stockpile more foods such as flour, groats and sunflower oil. Buckwheat groats have always been one of the most popular commodity items and considered to be a socially important product.

Apart from increased domestic demand, buckwheat price was also influenced by price growth in the world grain market.

According to the State Statistics Service, the average consumer price of buckwheat groats has increased to UAH 38.9/kg over the year (+34%), though retail prices are still higher.

Buckwheat price has increased to a still greater extent over the year – now it is UAH 21,500-22,500/MT versus UAH 14,500-15,000/MT in April 2020 (i.e. one and a half times higher).

The Ag Ministry forecasts that 79.6 Th ha will be planted for the 2021 harvest (as much as last year). Growers had not started planting as of April 1 because buckwheat is a later spring crop, which is sown in May-June.

The government is trying to make buckwheat growing more attractive to farmers thanks to financial support. According to the latest information, it is projected to allocate UAH 3500 per hectare planted to buckwheat in MY 2021/22. Ag Ministry officials believe this step will allow increasing its acreage to at least 90 Th ha.

At the same time, Ukraine continue increasing imports both buckwheat and buckwheat groats, UkrAgroConsult reports.
