According to consulting firm AgRural, soybean planting area in Brazil in 2026/27 will reach a record 49.006 million hectares, up 0.9% from the previous cycle.

This forecast represents the 20th consecutive annual increase in soybean planting area in Brazil, but also the smallest annual increase in two decades, limited by producer concerns about profitability and caution due to El Niño.

The increase of 443,000 hectares is limited by higher production costs, stable prices, tighter credit, rising debt, and concerns about El Niño, AgRural stated.

El Niño will bring rain for early planting in the central-western regions but poses the risk of longer dry periods in northern regions, meteorological company Nottus reported last week.

CORN

According to AgRural, as of last Thursday, farmers in central-southern Brazil had harvested 16% of the second 2026 corn crop, up from 8% the previous week and exceeding the 13% recorded a year earlier.

Mato Grosso continues to lead the way, followed by other states where precipitation and low temperatures are limiting moisture loss in grain and slowing fieldwork, AgRural reported.
