Brazilian farmers are not interested in increasing soybean acreage
In the 2026/2027 season, soybean acreage in Brazil will only be slightly expanded due to higher costs and risks associated with the El Niño climate phenomenon, said Argus analyst Natalia Giannetti.
Farmers in Brazil, the world’s largest soybean producer and exporter, are facing shrinking soybean cultivation margins due to rising fertilizer costs amid geopolitical tensions. This reduces incentives to expand acreage, Giannetti said.
The risk of a strong El Niño, which typically brings drought to the center of the country and heavy rains to the south, poses an additional threat to the future harvest, according to Argus. “Too much rain is a problem, and lack of rain is even greater,” noted Natalia Giannetti.
Argus has not yet released a precise soybean acreage forecast for the next soybean planting season, which begins in mid-September.
