Brazil resumes US wheat purchases amid competition from Russia
Brazil has made its first purchase of US soft red winter wheat (SRW) in 2026 amid growing competition from Russian exporters. The deal followed a visit by a Brazilian trade delegation to Ohio, where importers learned about wheat production practices and grain quality characteristics.
Bunge purchased around 15 thsd tons of wheat to meet Mondelez’s production needs. Brazilian buyers are primarily interested in consistent grain quality and the functional characteristics required by the baking and confectionery industries.
According to Wendy Osborn, director of market development at Ohio Corn and Wheat, US exporters face significant price competition from Russian wheat. Lower prices offered by competitors make it challenging to promote US wheat in international markets, prompting American suppliers to emphasize product quality and reliable transportation.
Meanwhile, Brazilian importers place particular importance on consistent wheat characteristics, which are essential for industrial processing. US suppliers expect that meeting buyers’ quality requirements will help partially offset the price gap with competitors.
The Brazilian delegation’s two-day visit to Ohio was organized under the Ohio Small Grains Marketing Program. The visit aimed to strengthen trade relationships and promote US wheat in the Brazilian market. Market participants hope that renewed purchases will create opportunities for further growth in US wheat exports to Brazil.
