Brazil remains the main supplier of corn to the Chinese market
According to a report from the General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China, in the first two months of 2024, China imported 6.19 million tons of corn, which is 178% higher than in the same period of 2023. It is noted that of this total, 4.1 million tons came from Brazil, making it the main supplier of corn to the Chinese market and thus displacing the United States from this position. At the same time, the United States shipped only 766.99 thousand tons of corn to the PRC in the first two months of 2024, down 67% from the same period of the previous year.
The increase in Brazilian corn exports is due to both higher production and logistical advantages. Moreover, Brazil is showing interest in exporting its products through the Chinese-controlled Peruvian port of Chancay, which would allow its exporters to deliver goods to other Asian countries via the Pacific Ocean, reducing transit time by about half.
