Brazil begins planting first crop of corn

The first corn planting campaign for the 2025/26 MY has started in Brazil, and according to the consulting agency AgRural, as of August 31, 6.7% of the planned area had been sown, which is 3.5% more than a week earlier. Compared to last year, when 7.7% of the area was sown on this date, progress is somewhat slower, but farmers are actively increasing the pace. The main work is concentrated in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, and has also begun in the states of Paraná and Santa Catarina, where farmers are preparing for the new season.
In parallel, Brazilian farmers are preparing for soybean planting, which could begin as early as September 7 thanks to sufficient soil moisture in many regions. This factor is key to a successful start to the planting campaign, as soybeans traditionally occupy a significant part of the country’s agricultural area. However, Brazil’s National Institute of Meteorology (INMET) predicts that rainfall in September will fall to 50 mm below the historical average of 150 mm, which could make it difficult for crops to germinate.
The projected increase in temperature of 0.6–1.5°C above average also poses potential risks to crops, particularly soybeans, which are sensitive to drought conditions. Farmers in the state of Mato Grosso and other key growing regions are concerned about the possible impact of weather conditions on yields. Despite this, Brazil’s agricultural sector remains optimistic, relying on advanced technologies and experience from previous seasons to overcome the challenges.
