Bangladesh increases rice and corn production while wheat output declines
Bangladesh recorded higher production of rice, corn and onions in the FY 2025/26 while wheat and potato harvests declined. According to data released by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) on November 1, 2026, the largest increase among major grain crops was recorded in Aman rice production, which rose by 844.5 thsd tons.
Aman rice production reached 17.36 mln tons, compared with 16.51 mln tons in the previous fiscal year, representing an increase of approximately 5.1%. Meanwhile, the area planted with the crop expanded from 13.87 mln to 14.17 mln acres, or approximately from 5.61 mln to 5.74 mln ha. The expansion in cultivated area contributed to higher overall Aman rice production.
Winter corn production in Bangladesh also increased, reaching approximately 5.05 mln tons. Meanwhile, wheat production declined to 1.03 mln tons, compared with 1.04 mln tons a year earlier.
In the vegetable sector, the largest increase was recorded in onion production, which rose by 18.6% to 3.82 mln tons from 3.22 mln tons in the previous year. Garlic production reached 605.4 thsd tons, while dry chilli output stood at 616.3 thsd tons. Meanwhile, potato production declined by approximately 2.6% to 11.27 mln tons, compared with 11.57 mln tons a year earlier.
The updated statistics indicate increased production of several important food crops in Bangladesh, although wheat and potato output declined.
