In January 2026, Azerbaijan imported 129,932.8 tonnes of wheat worth $28.9 million, according to data from the country’s State Customs Committee, local media reported.

Compared with the same period in 2025, imports increased significantly. In January last year, Azerbaijan purchased 86,654 tonnes of wheat valued at $18.7 million. This means imports rose by about 50% in volume terms and 54.4% in value year on year.

Trade data also show a steady upward trend over recent years. In January 2024, Azerbaijan imported around 75,800 tonnes of wheat worth approximately $16.4 million.

A year earlier, in January 2023, wheat imports stood at roughly 68,200 tonnes valued at about $15.2 million, reflecting more moderate demand and relatively stronger domestic supply at that time.

Analysts note that the sharp increase in imports in early 2026 may be linked to shifts in the domestic grain balance, harvest fluctuations, and the need to replenish stocks amid growing consumption.

Further development of the grain and oilseed markets of Ukraine and the Black Sea region will be in the spotlight of the BLACK SEA GRAIN. KYIV conference, taking place on April 22–23 in Kyiv.
