Austria enters the top 3 soybean producers in the EU
Austria has become the third largest soybean producer in the European Union for the first time, harvesting about 272 thousand tons of the crop in 2025. This is reported by OTS.
In terms of production, the country is second only to Italy and France, according to data from Agrarmarkt Austria (AMA).
The area under soybeans in Austria reached about 86 thousand hectares, which also secured the country a place in the top five EU leaders in terms of sown area. An important feature of Austrian soybean production is the high share of organic products – about 36%.
The growth of the industry is facilitated by the National Protein Strategy, aimed at increasing self-sufficiency in vegetable protein and reducing import dependence. The Austrian government is also promoting the idea of a similar strategy at the EU level.
The high yield in 2025 was the result of favorable weather conditions, the use of modern cultivation technologies, adapted varieties and suitable soil and climate conditions. Austrian seed companies play a significant role, having been involved in the selection of soybean varieties adapted to local conditions for a long time.
Soybeans are the fourth most important field crop in Austria after wheat, corn and barley. As a pulse, they help reduce the use of mineral fertilizers, improve soil conditions and support biodiversity. Austrian soybeans are used to produce animal feed, soybean oil and food products, including tofu, soy drinks and tempeh.
