Australian wheat exports fall 38% in November but remain above last year’s level

In November, Australia exported 1.09 million tonnes of wheat, including durum, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The figure was significantly lower than in October but remained well above the level recorded a year ago.

Compared with October, the first month of the new marketing year, shipments fell by 38% from 1.75 million tonnes. At the same time, exports were almost double the volume of November 2024, when Australia shipped only 574,000 tonnes of wheat.

In its January World Supply and Demand Estimates report, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) left its forecast for Australia’s current-season wheat exports unchanged at 27 million tonnes from a 37-million-tonne crop.

Low export volumes in November 2024 were partly due to drought in South Australia, which limited new-crop availability. In 2025, the relatively moderate shipments for the month reflect ample supplies of wheat from the Northern Hemisphere, reducing demand for Australian grain.

The largest containerized wheat markets in November were Vietnam, China, and Malaysia, while Iraq and Turkey emerged as notable buyers of durum wheat. In the bulk segment, the Philippines, Yemen, and Japan remained the main destinations, with China, India, and Mauritius returning as buyers after a brief absence.
