Australia boosts canola exports by 41% in August
Australia exported 299.1 thsd tons of canola in August 2026, up 41% from 211.6 thsd tons in July, according to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
China was by far the largest buyer of Australian canola in August, taking 167.5 thsd tons. France ranked second with 64.7 thsd tons, followed by Nepal with 13.4 thsd tons.
Exports were also sharply higher than in August 2025, when Australia shipped 178.2 thsd tons of canola. The increase partly reflects China’s return to the Australian market, while the UAE had been the largest buyer a year earlier.
At the start of the MY 2026/27, however, canola is still trailing wheat in planned shipments. According to Lachstock Consulting, around 333 thsd tons of canola are currently listed for October–November shipment, compared with more than 1.5 mln tons of wheat.
Lachstock forecasts Australia’s 2026/27 canola crop at 7.86 mln tons and exports at a record 6.55 mln tons. Around 2.2 mln tons of this volume could be shipped to China.
