Argentina tries to save soy exports after EU rejections over GM concerns

In Argentina, the agricultural sector is under pressure as the country risks losing access to a key export market. The concern follows recent rejections in Europe of soybean meal shipments after the detection of a GM strain not approved in the European Union.

The issue involves the HB4 soybean variety, a drought-resistant GM crop approved in Argentina and China but not authorized in the EU. Alarm intensified after Netherlands rejected several Argentine cargoes. As a major gateway for imports into the EU, such actions raise the risk of wider restrictions across the bloc.

In response, Argentine farmers and exporters are taking additional measures to isolate HB4 crops from the rest of the harvest. Identified fields are being closely monitored and effectively quarantined to prevent any mixing and ensure compliance with European import requirements.

At the same time, the government and industry are working to reassure importers and EU authorities about product safety and traceability. Soy exports remain crucial for Argentina’s economy, bringing in over $18 billion last year and supporting the country’s financial stability.

If Argentina fails to convince EU regulators, shipments may be redirected to alternative markets, particularly in Asia, where the GM strain is approved. However, maintaining access to the European market remains a top priority due to its significant role in global soybean meal trade.
