Argentina’s Secretariat of Agriculture (Senasa) has recently approved two new genetically modified plant organisms. The recently registered GM crops include:

  • DBN-Ø82Ø5-8 soybean from Beijing DaBeiNong Biotechnology (DBNBC),
  • SYN-ØØ26Ø-3 (MZIR260) corn from Syngenta.

The DBN-Ø82Ø5-8 soybean variety combines two agronomic traits: resistance to lepidoptera and tolerance to the herbicide glufosinate ammonium. Resistance is due to the expression of two Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) insecticidal proteins: Cry1Ac and Cry2Ab2, which are encoded by the cCry1Ac and cCry2Ab2 genes. Glyphosate tolerance is provided by the enzyme phosphinothricin-N-acetyltransferase (PAT), which is the result of the insertion of the cPAT gene into the soybean genome.

SYN-ØØ26Ø-3 (MZIR260) corn provides protection against lepidopteran pests and contains Cry1Gb and Cry1Ig.

When reviewing these products for approval, Senasa specialists concluded that corn and soybeans are not inferior in safety and nutritional value to conventional hybrids and are suitable for human and animal consumption.

Thus, in 2025, Argentina will authorize the use of 11 GMO crops, which is the highest figure in the last six years.
