Argentina strengthens position in India’s vegetable oil market
Argentina is strengthening its position in India’s vegetable oil market amid strong Indian demand and expanding domestic oilseed production. Bilateral trade between the two countries reached $6.5 billion in 2025, with agricultural products accounting for a significant share.
Argentina remains one of India’s key suppliers of soybean and sunflower oil. In 2025, Argentine soybean oil exports to India were valued at $3.712 billion, while shipments from the sunflower complex totaled $788 million.
Argentina produced 49.7 mln tons of soybeans and 7.4 mln tons of sunflower seed in the MY 2025/26, with sunflower output reaching a record level. The country’s substantial crushing capacity provides room for further growth in exports of vegetable oils and processed products.
India’s demand for vegetable oils remains strong. In August, the country imported 1.57 mln tons of edible oils, including a record 628.7 thsd tons of soybean oil.
Further trade growth could be supported by lower trade barriers in India and expanding Argentine production. The two countries are also exploring opportunities to increase trade in higher value-added agricultural products.
