Argentina expects a record sunseed harvest for the last 25 years
According to the German edition of Oil World, in 2025 Argentina will harvest 4.7 million tons of sunseed, which is 3.8 million tons more than last year. This will be the highest level in the last quarter of a century. Such a significant harvest exceeds the country’s domestic processing capacity, which creates new challenges for the agricultural sector. It is expected that this year Argentina will process 4.12 mln tons of sunseed, compared to 3.78 mln tons in 2024.
Despite the production growth, in January-March 2025, the processing volumes decreased to 858 thsd tonnes, compared to 880 thsd tonnes in the same period last year. Experts attribute this to restrictions imposed by Vicentin, in particular, and predict that the reduced processing will last until August. The current monthly processing volumes are 390-420 thousand tons, so most of the harvest is likely to be processed in the second half of the season. At the same time, the high harvest will boost exports to 125 thousand tons (compared to 77 thousand tons in 2024), and ending stocks will increase to 560 thousand tons from 180 thousand tons last year.
