Algeria to become self-sufficient in durum wheat, saving $1.5 bln in imports
Algeria will become fully self-sufficient in durum wheat for the first time this year following a strong domestic harvest. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced the milestone in an interview with state television, according to Bloomberg.
The president said favorable rainfall and improved growing conditions resulted in an excellent harvest, allowing the country to meet domestic demand without importing durum wheat in 2026.
According to Tebboune, the bumper crop will save Algeria about $1.5 bln that would otherwise have been spent on durum wheat imports.
Algeria is one of the world’s largest grain importers, and durum wheat is a strategic crop for the country as it is widely used to produce traditional foods, including couscous and pasta. Reducing reliance on imports is expected to ease pressure on the country’s budget and foreign currency reserves.
