Algeria purchases over 800 thsd tons of wheat in tender
Algeria’s state grain agency OAIC has purchased more than 800,000 metric tons of milling wheat in an international tender that closed on June 17. According to traders’ estimates, the total volume bought ranged between 800,000 and 870,000 tons, exceeding initial expectations of 600,000–780,000 tons.
The wheat was reportedly purchased at around $264–265 per ton on a cost-and-freight (C&F) basis. The tender calls for shipments from major supplying regions during August 1–15 and August 16–31. Wheat sourced from South America, Australia, or India would need to be shipped one month earlier.
Although the tender allowed wheat of optional origin, traders expect most supplies to come from Black Sea exporters, including Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine, and Russia. Algeria remains one of the world’s largest wheat importers, while French wheat is not expected to feature in the latest purchase amid ongoing diplomatic tensions between France and Algeria.
