Algeria could become a major new supplier of phosphate fertilizers to the global market

Algeria has launched construction of the first phase of a large integrated phosphate project that could significantly strengthen its position in the global fertilizer market. The complex is designed to produce 2.4 mln tons of phosphate fertilizers and 570 thsd tons of urea per year.

The project covers the entire production chain, from phosphate rock mining to finished fertilizer production and exports. The Bled El Hadba deposit is expected to produce 5.5 mln tons of phosphate rock annually and 3.2 mln tons of phosphate concentrate.

Further processing will take place at the Oued El Keberit complex, where phosphate fertilizers, ammonia and urea will be produced. The site will also include sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid production required for the integrated fertilizer chain.

A key part of the project will be dedicated export infrastructure at the Port of Annaba. It is expected to provide access for new volumes of phosphate products and fertilizers to international markets, including Europe, Africa, Latin America and Asia.

The project could allow Algeria to increase the share of higher-value products and move from mainly exporting phosphate raw materials toward larger-scale production of finished fertilizers. Production had previously been targeted to begin in 2027, although the latest commissioning schedule has not yet been confirmed.
