Afghan farmers shift from poppy to wheat and potatoes

In Mohammad Agha district of Afghanistan’s eastern Logar province, fields once dominated by opium poppy cultivation are increasingly being replaced by wheat and potato crops. The transition follows a nationwide ban on poppy cultivation introduced four years ago.

Since the enforcement of the ban on illicit drug production and trafficking, Afghan farmers have been gradually moving toward legal crops such as wheat, potatoes, maize, and beans. These alternatives are seen as more stable sources of income, despite offering lower short-term returns compared with poppy cultivation.

Local communities report that the shift has helped improve rural employment. Seasonal laborers are now engaged throughout the agricultural cycle, while farmers say wheat cultivation in particular generates more consistent job opportunities during planting, irrigation, and harvest periods than illicit crops previously did.

However, farmers also acknowledge significant challenges in the transition. They point to the need to restore soil fertility after years of poppy cultivation, as well as the importance of access to modern farming inputs and technologies to improve yields and profitability of legal crops.

Despite progress, farmers are calling for continued support from both the government and international organizations. They emphasize the need for fertilizers, certified seeds, improved irrigation systems, and better market access. According to them, only a combination of strict enforcement against illegal crops and long-term agricultural investment can ensure a sustainable shift toward legal farming in rural Afghanistan.
