2022 U.S. Soybean Yield Lowered 0.5 bu/ac to 51.0 bu/ac

The 2022 U.S. soybean yield was lowered 0.5 bu/ac this week to 51.0 bu/ac and I have a neutral to lower bias going forward.

The 2022 U.S. soybean rating declined 2% to 59% rated good/excellent. The soybeans are 64% blooming compared to 74% last year and 69% average. The soybeans are 26% setting pods compared to 39% last year and 34% average. The soybean development is slower than normal, but not quite as delayed as the corn.

Weather last week and over the weekend was good for soybeans in the northern and eastern Corn Belt, but not as good in the western and southwestern Corn Belt. Rainfall this week is expected to favor the southern Midwest and northern Delta. Dryness is expected to increase in the northwestern Midwest including Iowa.

Record high temperatures last week in the western Corn Belt hit as the soybeans were blooming and starting to set pods. The temperatures this week are forecasted to be more seasonal especially in the northern and eastern Corn Belt.

The calendar switches to August next week and August is the most important month for soybeans. The soybeans are going to enter August in average or slightly below average condition, but the longer-range forecast is calling for a return of hotter and dryer conditions. If a ridge rebuilds over the western Corn Belt, that would be a concern for the soybeans.
