2022/23 Safrinha Corn in Brazil Benefiting From Good Weather
The safrinha corn planting is essentially complete with just a few areas left to plant in the more southern locations. The weather has been beneficial for the safrinha corn in the northern areas. The safrinha corn in the southern areas was planted later than desired, but the weather has generally been beneficial, at least thus far. Southern Brazil has recently received beneficial amounts of rainfall and there is more in the forecast at least for the 6-10-day period.
It is already the middle of April and the weather has been beneficial for the safrinha corn in both the northern and southern production areas. A couple more good rains in Mato Grosso will ensure a very good safrinha corn crop. In the southern production areas, the main concern going forward is the potential for an early frost. At the present time, there is no indication of an early frost.
Mato Grosso do Sul – Farmers in the state had planted 83.7% of their 2022/23 safrinha corn as of last week compared to 98.0% last year and 99.5% average according to the Agriculture and Livestock Federation of Mato Grosso do Sul (Famasul). It is late to be planting safrinha corn and there is an enhanced risk of dry weather and frost for the late planted corn.
Parana – The safrinha corn in Parana was 99% planted as of late last week. The safrinha corn was rated 13% germinating, 82% in vegetative development, and 5% pollinating. The corn was rated 2% average and 98% good.
