2021/22 Argentina Soybeans 64.7% Planted, Dryness Worries
The weather is getting hotter and dryer, 3% of the crop is now flowering, and the percentage of the crop rated good/excellent was 75% last week, down 13 points from the prior week. That is a big drop for one week, so the long anticipated adverse weather resulting from La Nina, may now start to manifest itself.
Argentina has been receiving just-in-time rains for about the last two months, but last week was one of its dryer weeks. The recent weather in Argentina has been wetter in the southern and western areas and dryer in the eastern and northern areas. The forecast for the next ten days is generally hot and dry with some of the hottest temperatures thus far this growing season.
The 2021/22 soybeans in Argentina were 64.7% planted as of late last week compared to 67.8% last year and 71.8% average according to the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange. This represents an advance of 8.7% for the week. In the core production areas, the soybeans are 90-95% planted with 30-50% planted in southern Argentina and less than 10% planted in northern Argentina. Approximately 80% of the full season soybeans are planted and 36% of the double crop soybeans are planted. A large percentage of the soybeans left to plant are in northern Argentina.
The soybeans are rated 1% poor/very poor, 24% fair, and 75% good/excellent. The good/excellent percentage is down 13 points from the prior week. The soil moisture for the soybeans is rated 7% short/very short, 92% favorable/optimum, and 1% surplus. The favorable/optimum percentage is down 6 points from the prior week.
Approximately 80% of the full-season soybeans are planted while 36% of the double crop soybeans are planted. Eight percent of the soybeans are starting to flower and farmers in the core production areas are planting their double crop soybeans after the wheat is harvested.
