Egypt has set maximum prices for unsubsidized bread, reinstating controls due to an expected rise in inflation. A directive issued by Supplies Minister Sherif Farouk sets the price cap on bread sold outside the state bread program at 2 Egyptian pounds (US$0.04) per 80-gram loaf.
A similar ceiling has been set for 50-gram fino bread, commonly used for sandwiches. Smaller loaves have lower prices: 60-gram loaves are capped at 1.5 pounds (US$0.03), and 40-gram loaves are capped at 1 pound (US$0.02). Similar measures were last introduced in the country in 2024 and 2022.
