Ukraine to harvest at least 1 MMT of high oleic sunflower seed

The planted area of high oleic sunflower in Ukraine increased in the 2020/21 season compared to the previous MY 2019/20 season. High premiums in MY 2019/20 were the key factor driving the expansion of plantings. The interest in growing high oleic sunflower was fueled by a stable foreign demand for high oleic sunflower oil.

MY 2020/21 turned out to be not the best year for farmers who had grown high oleic sunflower seed due to sharp drop in the premium from UAH 550 to zero. At the same time, high oleic sunflower oil exports totaled 426.4 KMT and shipped to more than 50 countries of the world. China and Malaysia considerably increased purchases of high oleic sunflower oil, EU imports fell.

The planted area of high oleic sunflower in 2021/22 is expected to shrink by 10% because of reduced exports of high oleic sunflower oil, weaker demand for high oleic sunflower seed from crushers and the absence of a price premium. The yield increase will offset the area reduction; therefore, the crop may reach at least 1 MMT. As of the beginning of MY 2021/22, the premium for high oleic sunflower was UAH 500-550/MT, UkrAgroConsult reports.
