In 2024, the countries of the European Union harvested 62.2 million tons of vegetables – 6% more than a year earlier. The leader in vegetable production was Spain, and the leader in fruit production was Italy.

This is reported by EuroNews with reference to Eurostat data.

The leader in vegetable production was Spain with 14.8 million tons. In second place was Italy (13.9 million tons), in third place was France (5.8 million tons). Next came Poland (5.23 million tons) and the Netherlands (5.1 million tons). In total, these five countries provided more than half of the total harvest.

By type of product, the largest changes occurred in the production of onions (+11%, up to 7 million tons), carrots (+6%, up to 4.7 million tons) and tomatoes (+5%, up to 16.8 million tons). Italy harvested the most tomatoes – 6 million tons, Germany led the production of carrots (850 thousand tons), and the Netherlands became the leader in onion cultivation (1.8 million tons).

In the segment of fruits, berries and nuts excluding citrus fruits, grapes and strawberries, the gross harvest in the EU amounted to 24.3 million tons, which is 2% less than in 2023. Italy took first place with 5.4 million tons, Spain took second place (4.3 million tons), and Poland took third place (4.1 million tons).

The most popular fruit in the European Union is the apple. In 2024, 11.6 million tons were harvested, of which 29% fell to Poland. Italy became the leader in the production of pears (24% of the EU harvest), and Spain – peaches (37%).

Thus, several countries form the backbone of the European Union’s vegetable and horticultural sector, providing most of the continent’s fresh produce production.
