The United States has suspended the imposition of 25% duties on Canadian goods for a month as Canada promised to tighten border controls and invest more in the fight against drug cartels.

This was announced by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

On February 2, Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing a 25% duty on imports of Canadian goods and 10% on Canadian media. He said that this is how he fights against illegal migrants and drug trafficking that enter the United States through the borders of neighboring countries.

So Canada plans to implement a 1.3 billion Canadian dollar (about $900 million) border protection plan. It will be guarded by about 10,000 military personnel who will act in coordination with U.S. forces. New helicopters and technologies are planned to be deployed.

In addition, Canada has committed itself to appointing a person responsible for combating drug cartels involved in the creation and sale of the synthetic drug fentanyl. It also recognizes cartels as terrorist organizations.

Trudeau has already signed a new directive to fight organized crime and fentanyl distribution, which the government will support with 200 million Canadian dollars (about $138 million).

The duties have been postponed for at least 30 days while Canada implements the necessary measures.
