US overtakes Brazil in corn exports to China early 2026
China’s corn imports fell to approximately 3.8 million tonnes in 2025, down from 8.4 million tonnes in 2024. Around 2.5 million tonnes came from Brazil, while U.S. shipments totaled just 169,000 tonnes. This decline reflects China’s policy over the past three years to boost domestic self-sufficiency rather than trade disputes.
With imports decreasing and domestic production rising, China’s evolving grain policy is expected to have significant implications for major exporters, including Brazil, the U.S., and Ukraine. China is likely to continue prioritizing internal efficiency, requiring global corn exporters to adjust to lower import demand.
While Brazil was the main supplier of corn to China in 2025, early Q1 2026 data show that the U.S. has regained market share and surpassed Brazil by late March.
