US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said on Fox Business that a possible deal between the Trump administration and the leaders of Canada and Mexico could roll back some tariffs on both countries. Lutnick said this on Fox Business.
Canada and Mexico, two of the United States’ largest trading partners, have retaliated with tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, which took effect on Tuesday. Trump said the increases are in response to both countries not doing enough to stem the flow of illegal immigration and illicit drugs across their borders with the United States.
Speaking on FOX Business on Tuesday, Lutnick said Trump would likely meet with the US’s neighbors to discuss a fair trade deal between the countries.
“He’s really looking at this, trying to see if there’s some way he can find a compromise where he can give something to the Canadians and the Mexicans, but they have to do more,” he said. “They have to end the deaths from fentanyl.”
“We’ll probably announce it tomorrow,” he added.
“If you respect us as your best trading partner, end it. You have to end fentanyl.”
“Both the Mexicans and the Canadians have been on the phone with me all day trying to show that they’re going to do better, and the president is listening because you know he’s very, very fair and very smart,” Lutnick said. “So I think he’s going to come to an agreement with them.”
