US boosts wheat trade with new program

Ralph Loos, Director of Global Outreach at U.S. Wheat Associates, announced that the creation of the Agricultural Trade Promotion and Facilitation Program within the recent reconciliation package is a significant win for wheat farmers. He stated that the program will greatly enhance efforts to expand access to global markets. “It’s been years since such funding was increased, so we’re thrilled about this opportunity,” Loos said, noting that the funds will be used to tap into new markets.
Starting in 2027, the new program will allocate $285 million annually for ongoing trade promotion initiatives. Funding for the existing Market Access Program (MAP) and Foreign Market Development (FMD) program, totaling $234.5 million, will remain unchanged. Loos emphasized that these resources will help attract new buyers and strengthen the position of U.S. wheat in the global market.
Loos highlighted that the high quality of U.S. wheat has kept exports steady this year, despite global trade uncertainties. “Buyers worldwide value the quality of U.S. wheat and are willing to pay a premium for it,” he said. He added that fluctuating tariffs have not yet impacted wheat trade as severely as other commodities, expressing hope that this trend continues.
“It’s all about supply and demand,” Loos explained. The U.S. has ample wheat supplies, which appeals to international buyers due to its reliability. The program aims to boost demand, potentially supporting stable supplies and driving prices upward. Loos shared these insights at the 2025 Illinois Wheat Forum in Greenville.
