US and China postpone mutual tariffs for 90 days

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order extending a moratorium on tariff increases on Chinese goods for another 90 days. The decision came hours before the previous moratorium, which was set to expire on August 11, 2025, was due to expire. CNBC reported, citing a White House official, that the decision was the result of the latest round of talks between the US and China in Stockholm in late July. Without the order, tariffs on Chinese goods would have returned to the level they were at in April, when the tariff war between the two countries was at its peak.
In response to the US actions, China also extended the postponement of an additional 24% tariff on US imports for 90 days, starting on August 12, 2025. According to the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China, the remaining 10% tariff on US goods will continue to be levied. In addition, Beijing has promised to suspend or cancel non-tariff measures against the United States, such as blacklisting American companies and restricting exports of rare earth elements. These steps are based on agreements reached on May 10-11 in Geneva.
The decision by both countries indicates a temporary easing of tensions in trade relations between the world’s two largest economies. The tariff war, which escalated in the spring, posed significant risks to global supply chains and economic stability. The extension of the tariff moratorium is an attempt by both sides to buy time for further negotiations aimed at a long-term settlement of trade disputes.
