Ukrainian wheat will have to compete with other suppliers in traditional markets

The top five buyers of Ukrainian wheat in the season that just ended were Spain, Egypt, Algeria, Indonesia, and Vietnam.
This was reported by grain market expert UkrAgroConsult Elizaveta Malyshko in her column for The Ukrainian Farmer.
According to her, shipments to Spain and Indonesia may decrease this season: Spain will switch to its own and European harvest, which has increased, and Indonesia will probably switch to the traditional Australian and American. The expert recalled that the US has agreed with Indonesia to increase supplies of American wheat in the next five years to at least 1 million tons. For comparison, in the MY 2024/25, Indonesia bought 524 thousand tons of wheat from the US, which is three times less than they imported from Ukraine.
“Algeria’s wheat needs are expected to be at the same level as last year. However, there will be considerable competition for this market between all the countries of the Black Sea region, which massively supplied grain last year, and Canada, where the harvest is also expected to increase,” noted Elizaveta Malyshko.
She noted that for the Egyptian market, competition will develop within the region, mainly with Russia, which this year may harvest more wheat than last year.
“We will also have to compete with Russian wheat for the Turkish market, which is returning to the topic of exporting flour from imported wheat and whose needs, if we believe the USDA, will double next year to 7.5 million tons (3.3 million tons in the current season),” concluded Elizaveta Malyshko.
