Ukraine will need up to 5 years to return to the pre-war level of grain production – Maryna Marynych
Ukraine will be able to return to the pre-war levels of grain production not earlier than in 3-5 years.
This was stated by Maryna Marynych, analyst of UkrAgroConsult, at the EURO GRAIN HUB Exchange & Forum 2021 in Bucharest.
“After the end of the war, we will be able to return to the previous levels of grain production, but this transition period will last at least five years. Then we will be able to reach, for example, the pre-war level of corn acreage – 5-6 million hectares,” said Marynych.
According to her, the range of estimates of the future corn area is very wide due to the uncertainty about the future export prospects.
“There are estimates of 3.3 mln hectares and lower on the market, which is almost two times less than before the full-scale invasion. The difference is significant, and for us to return to previous levels, we need the war to end and at least 3-5 years to pass,” says Maryna Marynych.
The expert pointed out that Ukraine currently has about 5 million tons of corn from the previous harvest. Due to difficulties with exports, farmers are switching to oilseeds, which are more expensive and smaller in volume.
According to UkrAgroConsult experts, oilseeds have always been and will be relevant for farmers, as they are easier to export due to their smaller volume, more attractive in price, and in demand by both Ukrainian and European processors.
EURO GRAIN HUB Exchange & Forum is a new regional platform to address the key agri market developments and deliver effective discussions and networking for all involved in the agricultural sector – from farmers, traders, input suppliers, animal and feed industry and stretching to logistics, storage, innovations, etc.
