Ukraine will for the first time provide half of its pasta production with its own durum wheat
In 2025, Ukrainian pasta producers will, for the first time in the history of the country’s independence, produce 50% of their products from durum wheat grown by foreign farmers. This was announced during the forum by Rodion Rybchinsky, director of the Flour Mills of Ukraine union.
“This year, for the first time in our (pasta production. — Ed.) industry, 50% of durum wheat, which was previously purchased abroad, will be replaced by domestic wheat. If this trend continues, I think that in the next two years Ukraine will stop importing durum wheat,” he said.
The expert called the reason for such import substitution climate change in the country. Currently, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Khmelnytskyi, and partly Vinnytsia regions are adapted for the production of durum wheat in view of global warming, Rybchinsky said.
Rybchinsky reminded that a mill is currently being built in Lviv region that will process durum wheat into pasta. At the same time, he noted that its capacity may eventually not be enough to process all the durum wheat grown by farmers.
He added that Ukrainian producers will definitely export such products, but the export volumes will hardly be comparable to those of Italy.
