Ukraine to face freezing weather

It will become noticeably colder in Ukraine from January 15 to January 20. Air temperature will fall to -15°C, even to -20°C in the northeast.
This poses no special threat to winter crops because most of Ukraine is covered with 5-15 cm of snow. The exceptions are the southernmost parts of Kherson and Zaporizhia regions, Crimea and Vinnytsia region.
Moreover, near-critical temperatures will not last for long. As a reminder, winter-kill temperatures for winter wheat in the tillering stage are -15-19°C, with those for rye at -14-15.5°C, barley at -9-11°C, rape at -8-10°C. These values imply soil temperature at the tillering-node depth, which is normally a few degrees higher than air temperature.
The upcoming frost may only cause slight damage to late-sown barley and rape in some fields in Vinnytsia region, UkrAgroConsult reports.
