Ukraine has already switched to the European model of regulation in the field of genetically modified organisms and is moving in the status of a country free of GMs.

This was stated by the Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine Taras Vysotsky in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.

“GM crops are not registered and are not allowed to be grown in Ukraine. The updated legislation, which fully implements EU standards, will come into force in September 2026,” he emphasized.

Vysotsky also added that as of today, there is no officially permitted GM variety in Ukraine, in particular, the cultivation of GM corn is prohibited. Only non-GM products are used for export to the EU.

“The next step is to strengthen the institutional capacity and the system for monitoring compliance with these requirements. But in general, we have no fundamental disagreements with our European partners regarding this policy. In addition, Ukraine should receive a competitive advantage as a producer of non-GM products,” the deputy minister said.

At the same time, he noted that Ukrainian farmers generally support work within the framework of European legislation and rely on non-GM production.

“At the same time, it is worth considering that in some EU countries the use of certain GM varieties is permitted, for example, for the production of feed. In the future, these norms, in accordance with the rules of the EU internal market, may also apply to Ukraine,” Taras Vysotsky suggested.
