Ukraine. Sharp temperature swings were unfavorable for survival of crops covered with less than 5 cm of snow

On February 11-13, the brief warming (to +5…+14ºC in the South) gave way to a sharp cold spell (-21…-23ºC in the northern, eastern, and central regions), followed by a decrease in the average daily air temperature to -8…-14.6ºC.
Soil temperature at the tillering-node depth of winter grains did not fall below -6.5ºC. This was above the crop-killing level, especially with snow cover available.
Sharp temperature swings substantially reduced plant viability and were unfavorable for survival of crops covered with less than 5 cm of snow.
Winter grains are in good and fair condition, UkrAgroConsult reports.
Weather forecast for February 22-28:
– Precipitation (2-10 mm) in the form of snow is expected in the northern and eastern regions. It will be dry in the rest of the country;
– In most of the territory, snow cover in the fields will be enough for protecting winter crops;
– Winter crops in the eastern and southern regions could have been partially damaged due to insufficient snow cover;
– Daytime melting of snow cover is possible in the western, central, southern regions because of above-zero temperatures;
– Air temperature in the West will be +8 … +10°C in the daytime, 0 … +2°C at night; the North will see -1 … -3°C in the daytime, -6 … -8°C at night; the Central regions will be exposed to -1 … +1°C in the daytime, -2 … -4°C at night; the East will get -7 … -9°C in the daytime, -12 … -14°C at night; and the South will witness 0 … +2°C in the daytime, -2 … -4°C at night.
