The Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine Vitaliy Koval met with representatives of the UN World Food Program headed by its Resident Representative and Director in Ukraine Richard Reagan. The meeting was also attended by Deputy Minister Oksana Osmachko.

The parties discussed further cooperation, including the implementation of the humanitarian initiative of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy “Grain from Ukraine”.

Vitaliy Koval thanked the WFP representatives for their support, noting that Ukraine has already demonstrated its status as a reliable guarantor of food security within the framework of Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s humanitarian initiative “Grain from Ukraine”. According to him, Ukraine wants to increase the supply of its products. In particular, to African countries. And also to expand the range of agricultural products that are supplied. In particular, to supply ready-to-eat food that can be stored, especially to school facilities for children’s meals.

“Despite Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukraine has proven its status as a reliable guarantor of food security. That is why it is especially important for Ukraine, which is at war, to help those people in other countries who are also in a crisis situation with food. It is important for us to expand the implementation of the presidential initiative. Among the potential countries to which Ukraine can supply food are Latin America, the Caribbean, the Middle East and Africa,” Vitaliy Koval said.

The Minister also asked Richard Reagan to support the opening of food hubs on the African continent.

In addition, the Minister of Agrarian Policy proposed to help farmers from the frontline areas. In particular, he suggested that WFP should buy crops from farmers, as they have no storage facilities due to the infrastructure destroyed by the enemy. In this way, the partners will support both farmers and those to whom they will supply their products. For his part, Richard Reagan emphasized the importance of Ukraine’s agricultural sector in ensuring international food security and assured of further support.

For reference: As part of the Grain from Ukraine initiative, 12 ships with agricultural products (wheat, flour, oil) were sent to Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Yemen, Nigeria, Sudan, Palestine, Malawi, Mozambique, Djibouti, Mauritania, and the DRC.

The Grain from Ukraine initiative was launched by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy in partnership with the World Food Program (WFP) to mitigate the damage caused to the global food system by Russian aggression and the attempted blockade of Ukrainian ports.
