Ukraine. Precipitation improved moisture supply in winter crop fields
Weather conditions. Variable air temperatures and significant precipitation were observed on February 9-13. Air temperatures on February 6-10 were 1-14°C above normal.
Moisture supply. Precipitation of varying intensities occurred in the form of rain, sleet and snow, with its rates at 1-50 mm. This somewhat improved moisture supply in winter crop fields, but only the upper layer got saturated with moisture, reports UkrAgroConsult.
Crop condition. Such weather conditions have prevented winter crops from entering the state of dormancy – the latter would have preserved their energy resources and help survive the winter. Sharp swings between above-zero air temperatures in the daytime and freezing ones at night, especially in January, were stressful for the plant organism and excessively dried the soil as well as above-ground plant parts.
