Ukraine. Moisture content in the 0-100 cm soil layer continues shrink rapidly
Weather conditions. In terms of air temperature, the time period of late March and early April was divided into two parts. The first half (March 27-29) was very warm with daily air temperatures averaging +7-12°C and peaking at 16-22°C. Then a cold-spell occurred on the last days of the month (March 30-31) and the winter weather pattern set in with average daily temperatures at 1.3-0.2°C below freezing. The lowest air temperature was within 3-8.5°C below freezing.
Moisture supply. On March 21-23, precipitation was seen almost all over the country. Its amount varied from 1 to 20 mm. Insignificant precipitation, high daytime air temperatures, strong winds, low relative air humidity resulted in dry wind events, which caused prompt evaporation of topsoil moisture. In view of the above, as well as due to moisture uptake by rapidly growing winter crops, effective moisture content in the 0-100-cm soil layer continues to shrink rapidly – this could entail soil drought, UkrAgroConsult reports.
Crop condition. According to a survey of winter grains, the plants are in good and fair condition, but there are some concerns about weak development of their secondary roots. This might have resulted from low night temperatures leading to slower growth and root development.
