Ukraine Loses the EU Market and Returns to Fierce Wheat Competition
The Ukrainian wheat market is undergoing a structural shift as export flows are rapidly moving away from the EU toward more competitive destinations. According to UkrAgroConsult, this transition reflects deeper changes in global trade and regional demand patterns.
The introduction of EU quotas at 1.3 M mt and weak demand resulted in underutilized export opportunities, while previous volumes of 3–6 M mt per season to Europe are no longer achievable.
Export activity slowed sharply, with shipments falling to 500–600 K mt per month and only 350 K mt exported in early March, creating additional pressure on the market.
The accumulation of stocks is becoming one of the central factors, with carryover potentially reaching at least 5 M mt, reshaping trader behavior and pricing dynamics.
Export geography reflects redistribution of flows from Europe toward MENA. Price dynamics combine feed and milling wheat segments, showing divergence. Balance indicators highlight interaction between exports, stocks and constraints.
Key trends
- Ukraine shifts wheat exports from EU to MENA
- Export slowdown increases carryover stocks
- EU quotas limit access to premium markets
- Competition intensifies in MENA
- Market becomes strategy-driven
