Ukraine is considering a ban on food imports from Poland

The blocking of checkpoints on the Polish-Ukrainian border and aggressive actions by Polish farmers against Ukrainian carriers may force the Cabinet of Ministers to ban imports of agricultural products from Poland.
According to Forbes Ukraine, several government officials confirmed discussions on the issue on condition of anonymity. According to them, the topic is sensitive, and they would like to avoid such drastic steps, but “we are now at the lowest point, and if things continue like this, we will be forced to do so.”
Mykola Solsky, the Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, confirmed that the option of a complete ban on the import of food or partial restrictions on certain goods exists. However, he refused to provide details, saying that the decision would be made after active negotiations with the Polish side. This may take up to two weeks.
- The blocking of the border is causing large losses to the Ukrainian budget. By the end of February, the amount of revenue lost by customs could reach UAH 7.7 billion.
- On February 20, Polish farmers threatened to block all border crossings with Ukraine.
- The conflict escalated when farmers stopped Ukrainian trucks with grain and dumped the grain on the ground.
