On January 21, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the State Targeted Economic Program for the Development of Livestock for the Period Until 2033.

The decision is aimed at restoring the production potential of the industry, stabilizing and increasing the livestock population, reducing import dependence, and creating long-term conditions for the sustainable development of livestock and strengthening the state’s food security, the Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture emphasized.

The need for such a document is due to the long-term reduction in the population of the main types of farm animals, production volumes in livestock, as well as significant losses in the industry as a result of the full-scale armed aggression of the Russian Federation. Some enterprises were destroyed or ceased operation, access to resources and markets was complicated.

The program provides for a set of measures, in particular, to develop breeding, increase the level of biosecurity and veterinary and sanitary control, as well as stimulate the production and export of products of animal origin.

“Livestock farming is not only a matter of food security, but also the basis of employment in rural areas and the development of agro-processing,” said Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment and Agriculture Taras Vysotsky. “The new state program establishes a long-term framework for the restoration of the industry after the losses caused by the war and its gradual transition to the European model of development. Our task is to create predictable conditions under which investing in livestock farming in Ukraine will be economically feasible and safe.”

The measures will be financed within the limits of the state budget expenditures for the relevant years and other sources not prohibited by law.

The program is a component of the implementation of strategic documents in the field of agricultural development and food security and forms the basis for the systematic modernization of the livestock industry in the medium and long term.
