U.S. harvests largest wheat crop since 2016
Wheat production in the United States in 2025 reached its highest level since 2016, according to U.S. Wheat Associates, the organization representing the industry in global markets. Despite some localized production challenges in certain states, overall grain quality remains consistently high. “This year’s national crop shows excellent results, with no major quality concerns,” said Ralph Loos, U.S. Wheat’s Director of Communications and Global Outreach.
According to Loos, total production surpassed not only last year’s volume but also the five-year average. “It’s a crop of great quality and abundant supply. With higher output, the supply outlook remains strong,” he emphasized. The global grain surplus has contributed to lower prices — soft white wheat in Portland ports is trading at around $5.90 per bushel.
At the same time, the U.S. continues to strengthen its position in export markets. As of October 16, wheat exports reached 11.2 million tons (411 million bushels), up 22% compared to the previous year. Industry representatives note that U.S. wheat is currently among the most price-competitive in the world, which is stimulating strong demand from importers.
The U.S. Wheat 2025 Crop Quality Report provides detailed data on each wheat class — from grain quality indicators to baking performance. The study is funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Foreign Agricultural Service Export Market Development Program and state wheat commissions. Samples are collected during harvest and analyzed at six partner laboratories across the country.
The report also highlights that the three Pacific Northwest states account for 95% of total U.S. soft white wheat production. Favorable weather conditions this year — moderate temperatures and sufficient early-season moisture — contributed to a well-balanced protein profile. “This report reflects not only the quality of the 2025 crop but also the dedication and hard work of American wheat farmers, of whom we are very proud,” concluded Mike Spier, CEO of U.S. Wheat Associates.
