Turkey reports unblocking of the grain corridor
The work of the grain corridor, through which agricultural products from Ukraine are supplied to the world market, has been resumed. This is reported by the Turkish TV channel TRT Haber, citing a source in the Turkish Ministry of Defense.
According to the TV channel, as a result of Turkey’s initiatives, ship inspections under the grain deal have resumed. Earlier, the Joint Coordination Center in Istanbul stated that on May 8 and 9, no inspections of ships under the grain initiative were allegedly carried out.
Turkish Presidential Spokesperson Ibrahim Kalın assessed the chances of extending the grain deal after May 18. According to him, certain steps are being taken to this end.
As a reminder, technical talks on the Black Sea Grain Initiative were held in Turkey on May 5. However, the participants failed to reach an agreement on the admission of new vessels to transport grain from Ukraine. This was announced during a briefing by Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General Farhan Haq.
“As of today, the Joint Coordination Center has not reached an agreement on the admission of new vessels to participate in the Black Sea Initiative. The Center continues its daily inspection work on previously admitted vessels,” Haq said.
According to him, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has announced to all three parties – Ukraine, Turkey and Russia – his proposals for further actions aimed at improving, extending and expanding the grain deal, taking into account the wishes of the parties.
