Trump threatens Canada with 100% duties for deal with China

US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he would impose a 100 percent tariff on all Canadian imports for a trade deal with China. The US president wrote about this on the social network Truth Social.

In his post, Trump contemptuously called Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney a “governor”, warning against a trade deal with Beijing.

“If Governor Carney thinks he will turn Canada into a ‘landing port’ for goods and products that China sends to the United States, he is deeply mistaken. China will eat Canada alive, completely swallow it, which will lead to the destruction of their businesses, social structure and usual way of life,” Trump wrote.

According to the US president, if Canada concludes a deal with China, it will “immediately receive a 100 percent tariff on all Canadian goods and products imported into the United States.”

As a reminder, following Carney’s recent visit to China, the countries agreed that Canada would ease tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles that it had imposed with the United States in 2024. In exchange, China would reduce tariffs on key Canadian agricultural products.

In addition, the agreement provides for Chinese investment in Canadian energy and consumer goods. In return, Canada plans to invest in China’s aerospace and advanced manufacturing industries.

On the eve, Donald Trump withdrew Canada’s invitation to join his newly created Peace Council as part of the latest conflict between the North American neighbors.

Trump withdrew the invitation after Carney appeared to have irritated the American president with his speech in Davos.

Trump said in Davos that Canada receives many “free gifts” from the United States and “should be grateful.” He also said that Canada exists because of the United States.
