Trump raises tariffs on Canadian goods to 35%
US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on the last day of his deadline for trade negotiations to impose a 35% tariff on Canadian goods, up from 25%.
The decision is set to take effect at midnight Eastern Time (7 a.m. Kyiv time – ed.).
The formal reason for the tariff increase was “the inability to cooperate with the United States to overcome the crisis related to the flow of fentanyl and other drugs across the border.”
However, the White House did not hide that the decision was also influenced by Canada’s announcement of its intention to officially recognize the state of Palestine in the fall – a trend in world politics that Washington actively resists, threatening political and economic consequences.
The 35% tariff will not apply only to goods that are specified in a separate agreement between the United States, Canada and Mexico.
