Trump and Xi discuss China’s purchases of US soybeans, possible visit to Beijing in April
U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he has accepted an invitation from Chinese President Xi Jinping to visit Beijing in April 2026. The announcement followed what Trump described as a “very good” phone conversation between the two leaders. Trump also invited Xi for an official state visit to Washington at the end of next year, signaling a possible attempt to stabilize relations between the two countries.
The call came as a continuation of the in-person meeting held by Trump and Xi nearly a month earlier in South Korea. According to the U.S. president, the leaders discussed a wide range of issues, including the war in Ukraine, efforts to combat fentanyl trafficking, and China’s purchases of American soybeans. Trump said the two sides had achieved “significant progress” in implementing recent agreements, offering a rare pause in the otherwise tense rivalry between Washington and Beijing.
Despite the positive tone from Washington, China placed emphasis elsewhere. Beijing said the conversation focused primarily on the situation around Taiwan, trade matters, and the war in Ukraine. The Chinese side did not mention any planned visits and instead reiterated its long-standing position that bringing Taiwan under mainland control is part of the post-World War II international order.
The leaders also addressed the conflict in Ukraine. Xi stressed that the “root causes of the crisis” must be resolved and repeated China’s support for “all efforts conducive to peace.” The statements come amid new diplomatic initiatives from Washington and renewed attempts to re-engage Beijing on broader security issues.
